The work week is over! I can go to bed before 12 tonight! I can sleep past 6! I made it through the week! I took a quick nap this afternoon and let Ravenclaw and Gryffindor watch TV, but I think I deserved it.

And… I have succeeded with painting! I finished the first coat of the master bedroom tonight. It was a total PITA because the taping took forever. There are closets, windows. doors, just a lot of taping. It took over an hour to tape. Ugh. Plus I had to take a shelf off and putty the holes from the giant screws that went into the wall. Yay.

The painting went pretty quickly, though. And the color just looks gorgeous! I love it. I can’t wait for The Chosen One to see it tomorrow morning!

In one week we painted the whole inside of the house. Other than some touch ups all that needs to be done is a second coat on 1 wall of the family room, a 2nd coat on the master bedroom and dining room, and a 2nd coat with better paint on the bathroom. Other than the hallway and trim, which I am not worried about at this point, that’s it. We’re done. I’m beyond thrilled! The family room should go quickly, as should the dining room. Not a lot of painting in either place. If we have decent paint, the bathroom will go quickly. Master bedroom is fussier, but 2nd coats are much easier than first coats, so it’ll go faster than tonight’s painting.

Unfortunately, I need to drive all over the place tomorrow due to horseback riding and the Imagine Dragons concert. But The Chosen One will be at the  house and in charge. And my folks offered to paint, which is great. SB might come, too, as well as another friend. I’m so lucky with good friends who are willing to help me paint!

I’m exhausted now, and looking forward to climbing into bed and reading for a few minutes before I pass out. I’m really proud of all we’ve accomplished this week! The house looks soooo much better than it did last Saturday! :)

Good night

vanityThat’s the best word to describe my day. Productive.

First thing, after dropping Ravenclaw and Gryffindor at school, I met with The Chosen One to re-decide on master bedroom and dining room paint colors. He had chosen two more samples, and they were home runs! Of course, that made it to 10 choices for the master bedroom, but at least we decided.

After meeting with him I did a full day of work (well, other than the time it took to drive Hufflepuff to the orthodontist, and then bring her from the orthodontist to the house). I actually had work to do, too.

Then I picked up take-out for dinner (shrimp Pad Thai), and picked up Ravenclaw from play practice. I dropped Ravenclaw off at the Little Purple House, kissed her and Gryffindor, picked up Hufflepuff, and drove over to the new house.

wallThe plumbers had been there earlier in the day, and they had installed the new vanity (yay! old one was hideous!) and two new toilets. A huge problem in that one of the new tanks was shattered and one had a big chip in it. The company will replace them, of course, but it’s a delay and it costs money for the plumbers to come again. Bah.

My friend SB had stopped in at work to grab my key, and she was busy doing the 2nd coat on the library when we got there. Hufflepuff had dinner, then I put her to work taping off the last wall of the family room while I started in on the dining room. I painted a section/swatch and sent a pic to The Chosen One to make sure he liked it before I did the whole room. Thankfully he agreed that it was awesome.

When SB was done with the library she and Hufflepuff finished painting the last wall of the living room and the big beam down the middle of the room, then did a second coat on the walls I had painted yesterday. When I finished in the dining room I painted a swatch in the master bedroom and sent that to The Chosen One. He couldn’t tell how amazing it was, but he said to paint a wall and send a pic in the morning. I really hope he likes it (and it dries well), because I lurve it. It went on looking like denim. I couldn’t stop saying how much I loved the color. It’s gorgeous. If we had to go through 10 samples to get that color, it was worth it. Yum.

M and SWhile I was drooling over the master bedroom paint color, Hufflepuff and SB started on the bathroom, painting it the same Eggnog as Hufflepuff’s room. Weirdly the paint was really thin. I don’t think we noticed it at first because we hadn’t painted any other rooms previously. It was super liquidy and hard to use. The first coat went on really poorly. We’re going to bring the gallon back to Home Depot and show them how liquidy it is and ask them to replace it. We’ll see how that works.

We did get a first coat up in the bathroom, but it’s a crummy first coat. And Hufflepuff gave up, giving me the paintbrush as soon as I finished with the wall in the master bedroom. This was my #cy365 prompt “Seize the Moment”. She really seized that moment! :)

Now to get some productive sleep and be ready to do it all over again tomorrow! I need to take a couple pictures of the paint in the daylight so The Chosen One can see it. Tomorrow night I’ll do a little more painting, and then I have helpers coming Saturday. Phew! I can see the finish line!

More painting, and then more painting

GirliesToday started out achey. My body is really protesting all this work! But, I need to get the painting done so we can start the moving process. I keep telling myself all this work will pay off, but it’s hard when my body hurts. Bah. Why do I get stuck with Lyme AND migraines AND Celiac? Just one would’ve been fine, thankyouverymuch. Blessedly paint fumes don’t trigger migraine peaks. So I can be grateful for that, at least.

After work today I started taping the upstairs bathroom and removing tape from other rooms. Ravenclaw and her friend K walked over after school, and they did homework while I touched up the two walls in their room that had already been done. Once I did that they started in on the other two walls (one at a time, of course). I did the edges/cutting-in, and they did almost all of the rolling. K is a natural! She did a fabulous job! And Ravenclaw is really learning about painting – she did great! I think these two walls will show that we learned a lot since we painted the first two walls. :)

FishingI had Gryffindor walk to the new house after school, too. She’s not a huge fan of painting, so she was working on taping the dining room and removing faceplates. She’s very good at that! (She did do a few strokes of the roller in their room so she could say she had painted her room. But it was just for show. The paint was already on the walls.) Anyhow, she found a little round hole in the floor, and got all excited. She wanted to find out where it went, so she took a nickel and made rope out of blue painter’s tape, and dropped it down the hole. She was convinced it must be a magic portal, and something like Narnia was on the other end. I didn’t want to crush her spirit, but when she sent me down to the basement to double check that it was a magic portal, I pulled on the “rope” so she knew I saw it. In the pic she’s decided that she was fishing for magic basement sharks after I saw the rope in the basement. So I didn’t crush her spirit. And her imagination got her a break from taping.

Dining room in progressI really do like painting now. I feel like I’m accomplishing something immediately. It’s wonderful! I can see that I’ve done something to make our house our own. However, I don’t like taping very much. No one does. It’s boring and time consuming. But, it’s necessary unless you’re very, very good. I’m not that good yet. And given my hand shaking it’s unlikely I’ll ever be that good. All of this goes to say that after Gryffindor did much of the taping in the dining room, Hufflepuff and I were all set to paint it. The dining room isn’t that big, and with the taping done we knew we could finish it with time to spare while the younger two were with their dad. But, when I sent a pic of the beginning of the wall to The Chosen One, he had second thoughts about the color.

Hufflepuff and I got frustrated. We had spent a lot of time and a lot of samples picking colors, and it was frustrating to have him change it. And, I had gotten my child labor to do much of the monotonous work for me. We ended up deciding I would finish the wall (I had already done the edges), and we would look at it in the morning with natural light. However, this meant that we needed to tape and prep the family/living room. Bah, bug, and hum. Neither one of us wanted to do that. And we were both tired and grumpy in general, so we might have shared those feelings with The Chosen One. And emotion doesn’t travel well via text. Neither one of us is mad at him, we were frustrated by him and grumpy about the situation. And Hufflepuff is 15. She’s emotional. She thinks he should have to paint the wall since he’s the one who changed his mind. I think I’d rather not have The Chosen One painting, as his OCD would drive me bananas. I’m happy to repaint, it won’t take very long, I just don’t want to go through the mind numbing chore of looking at colors and samples again. It drives me bananas.

Living roomSo, we’ll meet in the morning and see what we will see. In the meantime, Hufflepuff and I really knocked out the living room. It looks gorgeous! We got 3/4 of the walls done, and the wall that is left requires a lot of taping, but not a lot of painting – it has a sliding glass door and a big bay window like in the dining room. The hideous orange peeks through here and there, so it will need a second coat, but the color is delicious! Love it! It’s amazing to me how fast a 2nd coat goes on – it’s amazing. I’m not worried about finishing it. Though I do need more tape. And perhaps more rollers. I’ll have to check.

Tomorrow I have to work a full day, but I have to bring Hufflepuff to the orthodontist in the morning. And I’ll have pick up for Ravenclaw at 5:30 after her play practice. Then I’m painting with my friend SB again, and I’m hoping she can help with the master bedroom, or (if we can decide on a color) help me finish the living and dining rooms. She’s the one who did the paint on the library, but I want to wait for Saturday to do the 2nd coat there so I can see it in sunlight. It’s a big room, and the color is dark. Seeing it in daylight will really help me see where the problem areas are.

Now it’s off to sleep, busy day again tomorrow!

Yay and Ow

Ravenclaw selfieThe tl;dr message for today is Yay the house painting is coming along and Ow my body hurts.

So, today I had planned to just do the two ceilings that had been repaired, as the evening was booked with church stuff. Things changed.

I woke up to an incredibly sore body. Ow. My chronic Lyme/fibromyalgia was really acting up. I think the 7 hours of painting & taping really took their toll on me! Ow. My hips are especially sore, but they were sore during vacation when I did nothing. This was worse and clearly from doing too much. But it’ll all be over in a few weeks once we move in.

Toilet boxesAnyhow, I went straight to the house after work to do the ceilings. They need to be dry before we can paint those two rooms (dining room and family/living room). I had the dining room ceiling about 2/3 done when Ravenclaw called me asking for a ride. Her friend who lives 2 doors down from our new house wasn’t going home, so she was nervous about walking alone to the new house for the first time. I went and got her, and read a couple texts from The Chosen One which said the new toilets were delivered, and could I please put them in the basement. The driveway is icy, so I was really grateful that Ravenclaw was with me to help me carry the giant boxes, and just clear a way for me with the smaller boxes. We got them into the house, they look good, and now we’re just waiting for the plumber to come in and install them!

Sunroom/mudroomI did remember to take pictures of the newly painted rooms in the daylight. You can see the need for a second coat in a couple places, but you can get a sense for the color.

After I finished the ceilings (and Ravenclaw finished her interpretive dance to The Muppets songs), we went home to get dinner on the table. Gryffindor and 2 other youth were supposed to ride with me to the Temple. It was going to be my first time driving to the Temple, so I was a little nervous, but I was excited to be able to pay forward the rides I had been given. The best laid plans… L texted that she was sick, so she couldn’t go. Then Gryffindor collapsed under the weight of a ton of homework and we decided she needed to stay home and work. I got ready and drove over to pick up J, figuring that at least he and I could go. Then I was given the wrong address for him (it was the address of a great Mexican restaurant), when I found his house he didn’t come out when I honked, he didn’t pick up the phone… I had to give up after a while. Sigh.

KitchenI debated going to the Temple anyway, but I realized that I really needed to get the painting done and make sure homework happened. So I dropped off Ravenclaw with friends so she could go do her church activity, and went to the new house to get some painting done. I did a second coat on the kitchen and on the sunroom/mudroom. They’re both shades of blue, and I love them. The sunroom/mudroom is a perfect sky blue on a sunny day and the kitchen is a periwinkle/sky at dusk color. So pretty. They’ll look even better tomorrow when I can take the tape off the walls and outlets! :)

LibraryI got home at 9:15 and found Hufflepuff still talking on her Skype call with her friends, Gryffindor almost done with her homework, and Ravenclaw having just returned from her activity and finished with her homework. I got a bit of attitude from Hufflepuff when I told her that 9:30 was a reasonable time to have to get off the phone, but given that she’s been wonderful about that for the past week, I was kind of expecting it. There’s only so long that a teenage girl can go without giving her mom attitude. I’m tough, I can handle it.

Tomorrow I hope we can get a second coat done on the library and get going on the dining room and living room. The living room is huge, though, so it might take a while. A good amount of wall without much that needs to be taped off, though, which is nice. After school we’ll work on the younger 2 girls’ room and painting the final two walls. I also need to touch up a few spots on the walls we have already painted, but that won’t take long.

And now I’m up again well past bedtime. It took forever to help Gryffindor write a paragraph about her identity, my body is worn out, and I’m exhausted.

A Painting we will go

So, today was all about painting. It was really hard to wake up this morning after a week’s vacation! The girls and I really just wanted to stay in bed, but we did get up and everyone got to school and work early. After work ran quickly to Whole Foods for milk, and then to the new house right away. T, my Visiting Teacher from Church came over, and she helped me tape the mudroom.

After she left I started painting. I primed the ceiling and the walls that were just drywall. When that was done, I started in on the mudroom, changing it from a greeny-yellow to a pretty sky blue. When I had gotten part way into it, my friend SB came over with her daughter ML. They started in on the library, taping and painting. It was amazing how quickly the paint went up and how good it looked so quickly! The natural lighting in the library sucks in the evening, so the picture really doesn’t do it justice.

The picture also makes it look like the original color is white – it’s not, it’s a yellow that really didn’t go with what we wanted for the house. I’ll have to take pictures of the finished rooms tomorrow.

Hufflepuff and Gryffindor came straight home after school. Hufflepuff’s wrist was still hurting, so she got a day off from painting. Gryffindor had homework, so she was given a pass, too. Ravenclaw didn’t finish her play practice until 5:30, so I left S and her daughter at the house when I ran over to get Ravenclaw and pick up a light. The light really made a ton of difference in being able to get a good read on how well the paint was covering the walls.

ML and Ravenclaw worked for a little while before ML’s dad showed up. After a tour he dropped Ravenclaw off with her sisters at the old house and took ML home for dinner and bed. I had left my kids with chili in the crock pot, so they ate while I obsessively painted for 7 hours.

kitchen wallAround 6 my friend M showed up, and she was soon followed by my friend SBK. They got started on the kitchen. It’s amazing how fast 4 people can change 3 rooms! We really made a huge, huge difference in the house.

It looks like the kitchen will need a quick second coat, and the mudroom as well. But, having already taped the room it’ll go quickly. SB did two coats on the library, so it’s looking amazing. My hands are currently coated in paint from 3 rooms, as I worked on all three.

Tomorrow I want to paint the two ceilings after work. I have to take a few teens to the Temple tomorrow night, so I can’t paint for 7 hours again, but I can get in an hour or two after work and before it’s time to make dinner and leave.

Hufflepuff’s room is fabulous, but her sisters’ room still needs some work. I need to do touch-ups in a few places on the two walls we finished, then I need to re-tape and paint the other two walls. That should be a pretty quick job, so it’s possible that Ravenclaw and I will get it done after school tomorrow. I have asked her to walk to the new house after school, and I’m waiting to see if that happens or not. If her friend Z is walking home, that’s perfect, as Z lives two houses down from us. But, if Z isn’t walking, then she’s nervous to walk alone, which I understand. It’s still a new routine and a new house, so it’ll take some time for her to get used to it.

Tonight I’m feeling tired (duh) and feeling incredibly blessed that I have friends who can paint and love to hang out, chat, sing along to songs, be silly, and paint together. And I feel a bit embarrassed that a 10 year old can out-paint me. Seriously, ML is fabulous. She has great roller skills and she’s painted a lot more than I have. Oh, and she never gets any paint on herself. It’s almost freaky. At first I was thinking it was ok that she was painting because it was a first coat, and we knew it would need a second coat. And then I saw her paint. Yeah, she showed me up.

Wednesday we’re having another painting party, and I’m hoping to get the dining room and the living room done. If we can do that, I’ll be totally psyched. Hufflepuff is going to help me on Thursday night, and if I haven’t finished her sisters’ room by then she can help me finish that. That will just leave the master bedroom for me to do. The upstairs bathroom and the hallway are another problem. I’m thinking we should use leftover paint for them (Hufflepuff’s room color for the hallway, & either the mudroom or kitchen for the bathroom), but I don’t know what The Chosen One thinks.

The Chosen One is going to be so impressed (I hope!) tomorrow when he comes to the house! We’ve made huge strides in a short amount of time. Unfortunately he’ll see the flaws, too – he’s the first one to see tonight’s painting in daylight, so I hope he remembers that we can touch up/do another coat if it’s not perfect. He’s going to talk basement windows with the contractor, and then later this week we’ll have an electrician coming in, the plumbers will be installing the new toilets, and the roofers will be coming soon. Whew! Busy week! Oh, and we need to get a new vanity for the downstairs bathroom, too.

Church and house painting

eggnogLame title, but that’s what we did today. Yay!

Church went well – Hufflepuff went with us, and she got a fair amount of attention welcoming her back, plus she has a sprained wrist, so that got some attention, too. Thankfully she has a good answer (skiing) for what happened.

I didn’t have to teach today, which meant I was able to go to the other meetings, which is lovely. I often end up teaching for weeks and weeks in a row, but it’s nice to see the other adults on Sundays, too. I also like having a little more to think about. I do miss the kids in my class, though – we missed last Sunday due to migraine and snow, so I’ll be really happy to see them next week. I’m a little sad I missed teaching about Noah, but I’ll live. Ravenclaw came home with a nice bit of coloring she did of the animals from the ark.

purpleI was trying to talk to a few people after church, so that meant the girls got to hang out with their friends for a while. It was lovely. :) Even Hufflepuff had fun – her favorite baby & toddler were there.

After Church we went home for lunch and I went out with The Chosen One to finalize paint colors. Again. At this point we’ve looked at 8 colors for the bedroom. Thankfully we’ve chosen one! Woohoo!!! There is much rejoicing! The dining room and our bedroom will be the same dark blue.

Today’s painting went well. I did the edging in Hufflepuff’s room and helped her get started on a second coat while Gryffindor and Ravenclaw worked on taping their room. The Eggnog color in Hufflepuff’s room looked amazing with the second coat, and she did a wonderful job of doing most of the painting. Fabulous! The younger two have a different shade of purple on each wall. So we taped off 2 walls and did those, and tomorrow I’ll move the tape at the corners of the walls and do the other two walls. I did the edging there, too, and Ravenclaw did most of the painting. She did a great job! I was really impressed! She’s a little shorter than the rest of us, so I needed to do the top of the walls, but she did wonderfully on the parts she could reach.

painting swordsTomorrow I have a bunch of people coming to help, so that should be great. I’m going to have to see what we can delegate where. I’m really looking forward to getting as much of the house done as possible this week, though! It’s amazing how much better a room looks when it’s been freshly painted! It really brightens my soul and leaves me feeling wonderful. I’m impatient to get going on it!

By the end of our time at the house today the girls had gotten fed up. They were hungry and tired and deprived of chocolate (all I had for a snack was pretzels). Hufflepuff kept up Skyping her friends, but Ravenclaw and Gryffindor took the paint sticks and used them as swords to fight. I liked the look of them with their shadows against the yellow wall. That’s going to look so nice when it’s pale blue! *sigh*

I’m finding that I really like painting. I kinda want to take the week off for painting, but I can’t afford that. I’ve decided that I’ll take a few days off before the move and the Monday after the move off to finish getting things settled. All in all I’m glad I had last week off with the girls to relax, because the next 3 weeks are going to totally be crunch time.

Oh, and before I forget, I got rides for the older girls to see Imagine Dragons on Saturday. I had thought I had a ride for them with my friend L, but she and her son are going 5 days later. So, less helpful. I emailed the other moms from church who are going, and found the girls another ride. Phew! Somehow I thought the concert was on the 14th. Yeah, I was really off! I’m glad Hufflepuff said something to me yesterday!

Painting day

Well, after watching the hour and a half of videos on how to paint, I felt pretty darn prepared today when I went to start painting. What I wasn’t prepared for was how long it takes and how much effort it requires. My arms and wrists got a good workout!

Hufflepuff and I worked on removing faceplates, putting the drop cloth down, and taping all around the room. I started with the cutting in with the brush, and she worked on the roller. Somehow we only bought one roller (duh!), but The Chosen One ran out to buy us a second and third so we’d have a long pole for when I do the ceiling in the dining and living rooms. (The leaking pipes mean that they had to tear down and put back up a couple walls and a couple ceilings.

We got a first coat down in Hufflepuff’s room, and then got putty and faceplates done in the other girls’ room. Tomorrow we’ll do the second coat in Hufflepuff’s room and tape and paint in the other girls’ room. Hufflepuff’s was a good one for a guinea pig room, as hers is all one color. Her eggnog color was going on top of a pinkish purple, so even with primer included in the paint it will need a second coat to cover completely.

The younger girls have 4 shades of purple going up over white, so I’m hoping and praying theirs will only take one coat. It’s going to be a nightmare if we have to do more than one coat.

We are pretty darn set on the dining room color and the new kitchen color. Not 100% on a bedroom color, though.

We got the paint for the sunroom/mudroom, and my friend Susan is coming over on Monday to help me paint. I’m hoping it goes up smoothly. That’s a blue on top of a yellow.

I’ll also have to prime the ceiling and walls that were re-drywalled. That should be done soonish (tomorrow? Monday?) so that when people come to help paint they don’t have to worry about the priming. We’ll also need to get the paint for the living room, dining room, and kitchen. And the library. Yikes, that’s a lot of paint! Here’s hoping many friends can come help! :) I will repay with baked goods!

The Chosen One made it so we have wifi in the house! Squee! Tomorrow he’ll work on vacuuming and finishing the shoveling so we can put our awesome new mat out in front of the house. The awesome new rug will probably go up after we paint the sunroom/mudroom.

I can’t believe I didn’t take any pictures today. I’ll have to take some tomorrow.

Here’s hoping the painting goes smoothly so we can work on moving on 3/15, which would be perfect. It’ll be better to move things once the paint is up so I can bring over things into the new house.  Changes are coming! And oh my goodness the whole world will be better once Hufflepuff has her own room and we all have more space!

Painting prep is moving prep

We got one step closer to moving today! The Chosen One and I went over to Home Depot and picked up sample paint colors for the rooms, then went back to the new house to test them out.

Well, we hit more than we missed. The dining room might be a bit too close to the living room, the kitchen might be a little too light, and we’re not close to getting a bedroom color, but we got the girls’ rooms situated, the mudroom/sunroom, the living room, and the library.

I spent an hour and a half learning how to paint via videos. They all really repeated what video #1 had said in 10 minutes, but it was best to make sure I had everything right. I also watched how to paint a ceiling, as we have two areas where we’ll have to paint the ceiling due to new drywall. Overall it really doesn’t look that hard. I’ll start with the girls’ rooms and then move on to the sunroom and the library, as those are going to have a lot of furniture covering them.

The girls actually did the chores I had assigned them while The Chosen One and I were out running errands. There was much rejoicing!

Gryffindor and Ravenclaw are with their dad, and due to her disagreement with my folks Hufflepuff isn’t staying there. So, I’m home waiting to run to go get Hufflepuff at the end of her activity tonight. She’s getting all ready to be a JC at Girls Camp!

Tomorrow will be painting. And then more painting. Yay! If we get painted in a week, then we can move within a couple weeks. I’m hoping to be in before my birthday on 3/22.

I want to move tomorrow

Seriously. The work has been done in the house. I just want to paint, buy some furniture, and move already. I need more space. The oldest is being annoying, and now I’ll never get a break from her because she’s pissed off my parents and isn’t speaking to them or her father. I need her to have her own room and I need to have enough space for everyone to have their own space. I also, oddly enough, actually want to live with my husband! I want to see him more often than I am now. I’m getting tired of this.

For now I’m reading while listening to instrumental music and cleaning/organizing while listening to podcasts. She has a loud voice. It travels.

Oh, and I’m selfish because I won’t drive her to a mall in Boston. So not happening. We have things to do this weekend. And the following weekend.

I’m blurting this all here because I don’t want to yell at her. I know she’s just being 15. I know that it’s normal for it to all be about her. I know that this is normal teen-ness. I know that she isn’t trying to be a twit. I know that this is just annoying to me because I’ve had a bad week for my pain and because I’m put in the place of defending her even though the same actions that annoyed my parents annoy me. I don’t like that. However, I dislike their reactions much more than I dislike her actions. They went over the top nuts at her and I can’t deal with that any more. I need to be out of the house they own. I need them not to have anything to hold over me any more.

I want to move. Now. I just don’t want to pack everything. As annoying as it was to sort out after we unpacked, it was lovely to have movers pack my whole house when I had toddlers. That won’t happen, though, so I’ll get started on packing and purging and moving the stuff from the basement so we can get into the new house.

And I’ll learn how to paint. It’s a good skill to have. And I’ll be grateful that church folks will want to help us move.
